Federation of Abbey Schools

AbbeyTeachingLearningGrowingTogetherFriendship

Welcome to the Federation of Abbey Schools, granted Academy Status by the Secretary of State for Education from 1st August 2011. This means we are funded directly from the Education Funding Agency and can use those funds purposefully and appropriately to meet the needs of all Abbey pupils.

We are termed a ‘hard federation.’ This means we operate as one school with one governing body. Staff and children mix and work closely to generate an ethos that promotes our culture of ‘Teaching, learning and growing together in friendship.’

There is a substantial workforce on site who all make a significant contribution to the personal well being and academic development of all children. All staff are supported and encouraged to develop professionally, particularly as leaders of learning who can reflect on their practice. It is an expectation that teachers’ professional development impacts on the classroom and school. We are in partnership with High Force Education (School Centred Initial Teacher Training), being one of its lead schools with a responsibility for training teachers of the future, many teachers who trained at HFE work here.

Standards at KS1 & 2 are good as evidenced by SAT outcomes at expected or beyond. Recent Ofsted inspections also document our good and outstanding features. Our children are regularly given considerable praise for their behaviour, attitude and general self-confidence both by visitors to school and also when they are learning in the community. Abbey is about providing diverse opportunities for children alongside the National Curriculum. Although we feel we deliver the curriculum in a creative way we are continually moving forward and exploring ways to make teaching and learning as exciting as possible. Teachers track the progress being made by children and set them targets to aid their progress and development. Teachers also monitor how pupils’ social skills develop. This information is shared with parents in ongoing dialogue to support and nurture each child in the best way possible.

We value our partnership with parents, the first educators of our children, and strive to ensure we are working together. Effective communication is crucial and very much a ‘two-way process’. We have developed procedures considerably in recent years particularly in view of new technology available. The website and learning platform are examples of this; however personal contact is encouraged, particularly when resolving simple issues.

Our school site has developed considerably. The Sports Hall is used by the children and the community and we have a super teaching kitchen. We are an Eco School and promote activities for a healthy lifestyle. There is also a strong music and PE culture, established initiatives include the ‘outdoor classroom’, curriculum focus weeks and cultural experiences. The addition of two extra classrooms on site in recent years has enabled us to have four small classes in Y2, 3 & 4; giving a real focus to pupils' progress. The most recent building, The Hideaway, is a centre for all sorts of enrichment activities including music, drama, outdoor learning and the addition of a sensory area.

We are a Rights Respecting School and promote this culture and ethos in everything we do, we want our children to be good citizens with British Values. We also believe that it is essential for pupils to have a grasp of the international dimension so our curriculum reflects this philosophy.

We invite you to explore the pages on our website and raise your understanding of the many things that are happening at the Federation of Abbey Schools.

If, as parent of a pupil attending this school you require a paper copy of the information on this website, we shall provide this free of charge.
