Visit from Mr Calvert

admin on: Year 5 Blog

On Wednesday 18th May, 5K were incredibly lucky to have a visit from one a parent volunteer, Mr Calvert, who owes a company called Wood Quirk. He delivered a fantastic message to the children about how you should always follow your dreams and believe that you can achieve anything that you want.  Demonstrating to us, once again, the importance of having a resilience, positive attitude.  We were very impressed with his wood carving skills. We also found it really exciting watching Mr Calvert using his power tools to create coasters for  everyone to decorate, varnish and take home. Miss Kelly was also particularly pleased with the fantastic pencil holder that a small group of children made for our classroom.

America Maps

In topic, 5K were tasked with piecing back together a map of America using our map reading skills. We all found it very tricky at first but with perseverance and team work we all got there in the end.

5K Class Assembly

admin on: Year 5 Blog

On Thursday 10th May, it was 5K's class assembly and we choose to talk about something which is really important in our classroom - having a growth mindset.  The children did an absolutely fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating (with the help of some excellent costumes) the importance of having the right attitude towards your learning. We discussed how  mistakes should be valued and celebrated as they help you to learn. The take home message from this assembly was  that learning and improving is a tough process and sometimes you need to try, fail then try again until you master something.

Author Visit

admin on: Year 5 Blog

The fantastic author, Chris Connaughton,  came to visit the Y5 children to deliver an English and drama workshop around the topic of discrimination. As our topic is America, we looked at Martin Luther King's famous speech and then read an extract from 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. We then used this as a stimulus to write our own diary entries. We had a fantastic day and Chris complimented the children on their mature, thoughtful attitudes towards such a sad subject. Well done Year 5!

Our (Virtual) Trip

admin on: Year 5 Blog

To start off our new topic, Year 5 got our passports ready, had them checked and stamps by the airport staff AKA our teachers, boarded the 'plane' and set off on a virtual tour around America by drone.  We weren't told where we were going and had to guess by carefully studying the landmarks that we recognised.

Nappies in Space!

admin on: Year 5 Blog

Y5 conducting a fair test to investigate which brand of nappy is the most absorbent and therefore the best to wear on a long mission to space! We found it very amusing to learn that some astronauts wear adult nappies under their space suits as it isn't always easy to go to the toilet whilst in space!

Safer Internet Day

admin on: Year 5 Blog

In year 5,  we talked about how we should celebrate the many positive experiences that the online world can bring whilst being mindful of the dangers. We talked about how, just as in the real world, people can experience happy and sad situations online. We looked at different scenarios which may evoke positive and negative emotions in people and shared some of our own personal experiences. We then ended the session by discussing how to stay happy and safe online and each made a pledge to carry out a good deed online.

5N show how sm-art they are

admin on: Year 5 Blog

Very busy end to the week in 5N.  Not only did we have our Bake Sale, we also had time to fit in a hectic art lesson!

Here are some examples of the Peter Thorpe work we have started to recreate (just to prove some of the paint actually went on the paper)

Premier League Poetry Prize

admin on: Year 5 Blog

Year 5 entered a Premier League poetry competition in December around the theme of resilience. We still have our fingers crossed for winning the competition as this won't be announced until late February. However, as one of the first 100 schools to enter, the Premier League have sent us bags full of wonderful poetry books. We are so pleased that our hard work has been rewarded and we can't wait to read them!

The Finished Product

admin on: Year 5 Blog

After we mapped out our setting in pairs, we took turns to talk through our journey whilst the rest of the class closed their eyes and tried to imagine walking through the setting. We then had to choose which setting was being described based on the words used. After all of our hard work, we now have the story maps up in the classroom ready to share our fantastic  ideas to help us with our own writing. Keep an eye out for this being posted on the blog next week.

Stepping into our story setting.

admin on: Year 5 Blog

This week, Year 5 have started writing their own sci-fi narratives. In order to ensure that we include a vivid setting description in our stories, we looked at the different parts of a setting piece by piece so that our descriptions are detailed - we want to make the reader feel like they are there!  We had lots of fun  putting the pieces of the setting back together like we were making a jigsaw . We let our imaginations run wild as we pictured ourselves walking along the road of our setting and created a map of how we would describe the setting using all of our senses. The vocabulary and collaboration skills were fantastic. Well done 5K!

Physical Science

admin on: Year 5 Blog

5K investigated the shape and relative size of the Earth, Sun and Moon. We then went outside and measured the relative distance between the Earth, Sun and Moon and  used our bodies to represent the orbiting process. We were shocked to find out how far from Earth the Sun is and how close the Moon is in comparison. Although we felt very dizzy practising the orbiting, it really helped us remember the process.

Scientific Researchers

admin on: Year 5 Blog

This afternoon, 5K investigated the following research question in pairs using the iPads.

This is something that we have been wondering about since we first started our space topic. Some of us had questions such as:-

How to astronauts sleep in space?

What kind of food do they eat?

How do they brush their teeth, wash and dry their hair?

How do they go to the toilet?

The children really enjoyed their independent research time and found out some excellent information to help us better understand about an astronaut's day to day routines when they are living aboard the ISS.

Mystery solved

admin on: Year 5 Blog

Inside the object, we discovered a cute little alien (we are still thinking of a name - please give us some suggestions)

We then watched a short clip of the same alien soaring through the air in his spaceship (the mystery object) and landing on planet Earth for what we believe to be a very important mission! We wrote some openings to our story about the alien's journey to Earth and what he must have thought when he landed on our strange planet.

We can't wait to watch the rest of the clip to find out what else the alien gets up to. Watch this space for some amazing stories retelling the alien's mission later on this week.

For now, here is a taster of some the fantastic sentence we have used in our openings:

As I landed on the colossal, harmful planet known as Earth, I started my mission to spy on Earthlings. Flabbergasted, I stared at the yellow ground they have here and was surprised at how soft it was. Kamal (5K)

My deadly mission had begun as I landed on the huge but primitive planet know as Earth. Excited, scared, I scanned my new, peculiar surroundings. Ted (5K)
